Large Kitchen Compost Bucket

Almost exactly the same as the Exaco but with a slightly larger capacity and the ability to site under a cabinet out of the way but still in a convenient place.

This is the second most popular plastic compost bucket and performs simply but very well. The only drawback is that they are not objects of great beauty, but they are extremely convenient so it is a matter of weighing up looks, if they are to be in the kitchen, against function and capacity. If they are to be kept outside or not in sight then they are the perfect cheap solution.

Norpro Compost Keeper Stainless Steel

A firm favorite and the best looking by a very large margin. Low in price yet with looks that mean it can be kept on the counter for ease of use.

This is what I personally have and it is the best there is. No smell and a stylish design actually enhances the look of the kitchen. Used for over a year it still shines like it is new and it has never given off an odor. And that is with just rinsing out the filters, not buying new ones! With a capacity slightly half of the plastic compost buckets it means more trips to the composter but if under cupboard storage space is an issue (it is for me), then this is the best.

BioBag MaxAir Compost Bucket

Innovative? Yes. Good reviews? Yes.

The BioBag compost bucket is something slightly different. It comes with bio-degradable bags that allow air to flow through, decreasing bacteria and moisture and therefore odors. You do need to change the bags regularly but that is not really a chore as they go on to the compost heap. Personally I don’t find them the prettiest of things but the lid is hinged so it can be hung on the inside of a cupboard door.

Picking A Compost Bucket

The final decision should be made once you have read about each option or you simply know that you want something that looks great as well as being functional (i.e the Norpro compost keeper).

The BioBag actually has the biggest capacity by a slight margin but is probably the worst looking. But if it is to go in a cupboard or in a room off the kitchen then it may be the best choice. For a low price then the simple green compost bucket with lid is about as good as it gets.

Not the most stylish but certainly the cheapest and with a good capacity. Take a look at each product where I go in to a lot more detail about the good (and bad) points of each option in turn.

Whatever you do decide to buy the main thing is that we keep on composting. If it means a daily trip to the compost heap, or compost tumbler, or only now and then if we buy a compost bucket, the main thing is to ensure we do not let our kitchen scraps go to waste.

Much like the other kitchen compost bucket options it is easy to clean and comes with a filter for the lid. But that is not all.

Durability

I have owned my cheap Norpro stainless steel compost keeper for over a year now and it still looks like it is brand new. It has been banged about and generally abused but the fact is that it is made very well.

It never leaks, even with liquids in it and it is about as well made as it could possibly be.

Aesthetics Of The Norpro Kitchen Compost Pail

Frankly it is the only compost bucket that actually looks good. The satin finish really does make it something to be proud of in the kitchen. It sits on my counter top next to the sink and actually makes the whole room look a little more expensive.

If you want a receptacle for your kitchen waste that does not have to be hidden away in a cupboard then this is the kitchen compost pail to buy. The discount Norpro kitchen compost keeper.

Odors

Unlike plastic models this has a lid that simply pulls straight off, no hinges. It means that it is very tight and there are no odors. We are supposed to change the carbon filter that fits easily in to the lid every 6 months but I have not changed mine in a year and there is still no odor.

Filters

The filter is basic but it works amazingly well. I expected to have to buy new ones, it probably is time now, but so far all it has needed is a rinse through now and then and it continues to work. It is a snug fit in the under-side of the lid and with vent holes in the lid itself the carbon filter is allowed to breathe and there has never been a hint of an odor in the kitchen.

Capacity

This is not the largest compost bucket, not by a long way. But even with a family it still won’t need emptying more than every few days. So, we simply have to weigh up aesthetics versus how often we want to make a trip to the compost heap. If you produce large amounts of waste daily then one of the other buckets in my guide may be more suitable.

As well as the Norpro compost keeper stainless steel price being very low it also has a lot of very positive reviews from customers. They love the durability and they love the look, this really is the only compost bucket that actually looks good on the counter.

Not the prettiest thing to put on the kitchen counter, it is certainly no Norpro compost keeper, that is for sure. But it has a hinged lid so it can be stored on a door in a cupboard for ease of use, and that is certainly where I would want it to be!

Odors

Odors are kept to a minimum because of the ventilation and the use of a  breathable bag, so you won’t be getting any nasty smells.

Bags

We need to buy replacement bags and we will probably need 1 or 2 a week. Personally for me this seems like a waste, even if they are biodegradable.

But as some have mentioned they like the fact that it the means that the compost bucket itself stays clean, everything goes in a bag in the bucket.

Useful?

It has a flip up lid that stays open until you close it so adding your scraps is very easy.

It is small enough to go under the counter but can also be sited on top if you don’t mind the look of it.

Odors

Odors are non-existent thanks to the clever design of the bags and the bucket so this is not a problem.

Reviews are positive for this item, the cheap BioBag Maxair compost bucket, for sale for the lowest price for a compost bucket. But we do need to buy the bags as well.

People love that it is not necessary to clean it as often as buckets that do not have bags, but personally I do not find this a problem.

If you want to get a cheap option then this is perfect. But for something that will last for a lifetime then please see my other options in the compost bucket guide linked to at the beginning of this article.

But the one advantage of this system is that as it is so aerated the scraps and contents of the bag do not ferment or begin to compost so it is much less likely to produce any odors. Although I have had the Norpro compost pail for over a year with not a single odor escaping so really it is going to come down to personal preference and the price.
